Day 1 - We woke up Monday morning with everything COVERED in thick white snow. We were in the middle of a record setting snow storm and in that moment, it was amazing and so much fun! Michael and I got in our normal Monday morning workout and then I took the kids to play in the snow while Michael got to work in our home office. After playing in the snow around the house, the kids grabbed their beach boogie boards and just starting walking down the street in search of a hill. We had snow ball fights with the neighbors, got in the hot tub and really enjoyed the day.
The school had planned ahead and sent home virtual work with the kids for Monday and Tuesday in the event school was cancelled, but with power and internet outages across the city, they quickly realized that wasn't going to work.
Later that afternoon, some neighbors came over for a snowball fight!
Day 2 - On Tuesday the ground was still covered in snow and we took our time with a slow morning. I finished reading The Penderwicks to the boys. Our internet was out, so Michael couldn't work at all and the ground was still covered in snow so we went exploring to see what the back of our property looked like. At one point Luna yelped and we watched her struggle to get out of a small tree but she didn't seemed phased once she released herself. Later that day, however, we saw that she was bleeding and appeared to have been impaled by a tree branch. We also learned that some friends and neighbors were completely out of power and had been for the last 24 hours. Wow! We realized Luna was acting weird and she needed to get checked out so Michael tracked down a vet in our neighborhood, by literally knocking on her door with Luna! The doctor was so sweet and jumped in Michael's truck and he drove them to the clinic where she checked out Luna's wound and gave her some shots and medicine to bring home.
As a precaution, we started preparing the lose power and water by keeping a fire going and filling our bathtub with water.
Day 3 - Wednesday morning we woke up to water all over our master bedroom floor. There was a leak in the wall behind my sink and even though our street still had water, we were forced to turn ours off. :( Thankfully our tub was full and I had also saved drinking water so I knew we would be okay for a few days if necessary. I pulled out all of our paper and plastic goods, trying to wash as few dishes as possible and preserving as much as we could. At this point the snow was almost completely melted and the birdies were drinking from our field but the arctic blast wasn't over yet.
Day 4 - Michael and I woke up early Thursday morning and were expecting the snow to come again any minute. It start snowing before the kids woke up and was quickly covering the ground again, coming down extremely thick! Today the kids played outside WHILE it was snowing all over them and we wanted to capture a lot of pictures of this historical week in San Antonio. They had a lot of pent up energy so we had some of their friends over and they had blast playing all day. Even though we were out of water and had no internet, we were truly counting our blessings of still having power and plenty of food to eat. Especially later that evening when we saw the smoke and raging flames of the apartment building directly behind our neighborhood where 50 families completely lost their homes. It was truly devastating.
Michael and Gil took the boys sledding at the bridge near our house and then they all came and played at our house after...SO. MUCH. SNOW. GEAR. :)
We were using pool water to flush our toilets.
On Friday, the temps were warming up and the snow was melting away for the last time. We went to a neighbors for breakfast and a hot shower. By the afternoon, our street had water back, so it was time for us to start dealing with our leak so that we could turn our water back on as well. Our poor drought tolerant plants that haven't even been around for a year are not looking too good.
After fixing our bathroom leak we turned the water back on to find another leak in our office. Both of the leaks were at outdoor spigots and luckily they were both placed behind built ins where were able to cut inside of cabinets and it was easy to patch. Within a few hours, our water was back on.
The girls got together to celebrate Emma Burek's 10th birthday, here in the neighborhood. They always do a performance of some kind that Emma puts together.
Whew, what a week! It's been fun, but we are ready to get back to normal!
